Cleansing drive to stop extortion soon
Golam Mostafa Jibon: After achieving visible credit by running purification expedition against Casinos, the government has determined to conduct a fresh and strong purification expedition against transport sector with a view to stop extorting and anarchy.
Meanwhile, the detectives have gathered necessary information against the marked extortionists, who have been controlling the sector for long abusing their political and muscle power.
According to the detective sources, a powerful syndicate of the extortionists led by five to 10 godfathers realizes at least Tk 20 crore from the sector in different means every day. Bulk portion of the collected illegal toll goes to the pockets of those godfathers and their associates, who are involved with controlling the sector.
Around 50 central level leaders of the sector have been playing vital role to realize illegal toll from the transport owners, drivers and workers from long.
Around Tk 7 crore out of the total collection are shared between other syndicate members including some unscrupulous members of different law enforcement agencies.
At least 686 illegal organizations have been running illegal toll collection activities across the country for long in broad daylight. Besides,
some 18 more organizations, which took approval from the government in different tricks, are also involved with extorting. To make the toll collection activities smooth and uninterrupted from the transport sector, the syndicate leaders and godfathers have also established several organizing forum in collaboration with different political parties’ leaders and activists.
Some transport drivers and workers claimed that, most top leaders of the syndicate are directly and indirectly involved with politics. Some of them are former bureaucrats, who control different situation staying behind the screen. Not only those, some police and traffic police are also engaged in extorting at different places in the country. Of the places, eastern and western sides of the Bangabandhu Multipurpose Jamuna Bridge, Koddarmorh and Hatikumrul intersection in the northern region are mentionable.
The total pressure of the extortion goes to the passengers’ pockets. The transport workers are forced to realize additional fare from the passengers to manage the toll collectors, they added.
Some transport owners complained that, Khandaker Enayet Ullah, General Secretary of Dhaka Road Transports Owners Association has established a powerful syndicate along with some BNP-Jamat followers avoiding sacrificing AL leaders. Due to huge extorting, transport owners are facing trouble drastically.
According to the intelligence report, the government is going to start the purification drives against the illegal toll collectors’ syndicate for the sake of nation. The government now wants to clean the weeds and garbage from the transport sector to make it free from extortion, corruptions and crimes.
