Staff Correspondent: The government has not shut transmission of any foreign channel but served two distributing companies with notice for airing Bangladeshi commercials on downlinked foreign television channels, says Information Minister Hasan Mahmud.
He, however, said that they remain firm on the decision to not allow advertisement of local products on foreign channels, reports. “The government just issued show cause notices on two cable operators as they violated the law but it didn’t shutdown any channel,” he told the media his office yesterday.
The two distributors – Nationwide Media Limited and Jadoo Vision Limited – have been asked to respond within the seven days, according to the report by the state news agency.
“As per the subsection-19 (13) of the Cable Television Network Act, 2006, no one can air local product’s advertisements on foreign channels as it is illegal and punishable offence … Not only Bangladeshi advertisements, they are also not allowed to broadcast any type of advertisement,” it quoted the minister saying.
Bangladeshi television channels are being deprived of advertisements and the country is losing Tk 500 cr-1000 crore a year, according to Hasan.
