Staff Correspondent: Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud yesterday said a good film could play a vital role in maintaining peace in the society as well as protecting the humanity.
“Films can keep the youth away from drugs, militancy and terrorism. A good film could play a vital role in exploring the intellect and conscience side by side with building the state, the nation and the society,” he said while addressing a two-day ‘Peace Film Festival’ at the Public Library.
FILMS4PEACE Foundation organized the first ever peace film festival in Bangladesh, where some 20 films of young filmmakers will be screened.
Former teacher of International Relations Department of Dhaka University Professor Dr CR Abrar, Festival Director Rokeya Prachy, Manusher Jonnyo Foundation Chief Executive Shaheen Anam, eminent film director Kawsar Chowdhury and Foundation Director Pervez Siddique, among others, addressed the inaugural function.
Dr Hasan said there is no alternative to films to explore the humanity and for peace to move the society ahead. “Tolerance and consciousness are needed to stop rumors in the society like child kidnapping for Padma river,” he added.
The minister said, “Film speaks for the life of people and it works as a mirror of society and its people… I want to urge the filmmakers including the youth to make films for arousing patriotism, aptitude, love and affection.”
Dr Hasan, also the publicity and publication secretary of the ruling Awami League, said, “We should build a developed nation besides developing the country. We need to stay away from being self-centered.”
The minister hoped that the filmmakers would make films to teach lessons of humanity along with entertainment.
Dr Hasan said the canvas of the flow of media has been changed during the last couple of years. Now people can reach their message to millions of people within a moment through social media.
