Lack of punishment and monitoring blamed
Golam Mostafa Jibon: Negligence, willfulness, poor skill and inefficiency of launch owners, drivers, masters and workers as well as overloading, faulty design, lack of fitness and proper supervision by the authorities concerned are the main reasons behind the frequent and horrific launch accidents in different water routes of the country, experts said.
Besides, lack of proper investigation and charge sheets over different accidents is helping the offenders to get crazy and out of reach.
Though, several probe bodies with several numbers of members have been formed over different launch accidents in the last five years, no investigation report has yet been submitted. As a result, the culprits remain out of reach, experts opined.
Launch accidents have now become a common phenomenon in the country like road accidents.
Hundreds of people lose their lives due to different horrific accidents.
Latest on June 29, a horrific launch accident took place in Buriganga river at Shyambazar Kathpotti near Sadarghat area, as Mayur-2 launch hits small shape Morning Bird launch, while Morning Bird reached Sadarghat area from Munshiganj at morning. The small Morning Bird capsized and drowned into the water. At least 33 bodies including women and children were recovered by the salvage teams, while many went missing.
Though, the Shipping Minister Khaled Mahmud Chowdhury during a spot visit termed it’s a preplanned accident, five members probe body formed by BIWTA on the same day to investigate into the incident, is yet to submit any report on this regard.
Senior officers of BIWTA, Fire Service and Civil Defense, Coast Guard and Navy said, country’s people are experiencing frequent launch accidents due to some reasons. Those are: faulty design of launches, carrying additional passengers compared to the capacity, lack of monitoring and statistics of accidents, plying of unfit launches, poor dredging in the water routes, apathy, corruption and irregularities of the authorities concerned in context of design approval.
Alhaz Saidur Rahman Rintu, Chairman of Sundarban Navigation and Vice-President of Launch Owners Association central committee said, “Most of the launch accidents occur for inefficient drivers and masters. Besides, lack of proper supervision and non-compliance with safety directives are also responsible behind many accidents.”
He urged the authorities concerned to take steps against all responsible persons and bring them into the book after proper investigation.
