Rehennuma Mostafa: Nematoceros mosquito is a variety of flying species. There are about 3,500 species of mosquitoes worldwide. Almost every type mosquito has the ability to carry germs, which can infect with the human bodies. Some of these germs are fatal. For example, Aedes mosquitoes carry life threatening germs like dengue and chikungunya. Not only dengue, people are infected with a number of diseases including Malaria, Filarial and Gallbladder infection caused by mosquito borne infections. No matter how small the look, mosquitoes are no less frightening to humans than to wild animals. Anopheles, Aedes, Culex and hemagogus are among the mosquitoes most commonly accustomed to sucking blood from the human bodies as well as animals. Unfortunately these four species of mosquitoes among others live in Bangladesh.
Due to the mild climate and densely populated country, mosquito outbreaks are rarely more or less seen throughout the year in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh should not be called extra mosquito reserve. Experts fear that, global warming will increase the incidence of mosquito bite in future.
A few days ago, dengue almost took epidemic form in the country due to spread of Aedes mosquito. Hundreds of people died from it that spread panic among the people.
Dhaka is more densely populated than other parts of the country. Naturally mosquito outbreaks and mosquito borne infections are more prevalent.
These mosquito repellent activities are conducted by two City Corporations in Dhaka. But, we noticed that, the mosquito repellent program has come slow down. Authorities concerned might have been forgotten the matter of mosquito elimination. But there is no scope to relax the program as breeding process of mosquitoes is continued for the all seasons and always.
Secondly simply spraying of mosquito medicines is not the only way to stay free from mosquitoes and diseases. There are six squires Kilometer reservoirs in the 134 squires Kilometers city. Owners of these reservoirs are owned by two city corporations, Dhaka WASA, the RAJUK, the government and non-government organizations including the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
Although these organizations have the responsibility of keeping their reservoirs clean and polishing the mosquitoes, it is alleged that they are not properly performing duties. On the other hand, 300 Kilometers carpeting drainage is not properly discharged.
Regrettably, all of authorities and agencies often blamed each other regarding mosquito repellent activities. In some cases, joint venture operates, but it is always our advice that it needs to be maintained.
At present, dengue patients are relatively low, but the epidemic prevalence at any time may need to be remembered by the authorities concerned.
We want to see a city free from mosquitoes. With so many authorities in the country, simple mosquitoes will bite people and send them to hospitals (?), it is not acceptable.
At present some large size Culex mosquitoes have increased in the capital. This is too harmful, although it is not dengue. Culex is a serious disease of Japanese encephalitis. The disease has been noticed in the country for years.
In field of Aedes mosquito repellent drugs and methods may not be successful in eliminating Culex mosquitoes. It may be different from the drugs and methods of elimination. This requires an experienced entomologist.
It is understood that mosquito repellent activities have been stalled during the two city elections, but it is not desirable at all. The elimination of mosquitoes should be a continuous activity.
On the other hand, public awareness is important. If townspeople keep their respective habitats and neighborhoods clean and don’t have the opportunity to grow mosquitoes and offspring mosquitoes can be easily rescued.
