Inefficient technologists main reasons
Golam Mostafa Jibon: T he mistake in corona testing is increasing day by day due to lack of efficient technologists. Patients are facing immense suffering over the faulty test reports. Many of them are losing lives for want of proper diagnosis.
Inefficient technologists can’t diagnose the disease as they can’t collect samples from the suspected corona victims or the people, who are carrying symptoms of COVID-19, as per need. The work of sample collection is going on with the inefficient health workers, who were involved with vaccination program. The workers have been pushed into the job after providing just a-day training that is not enough for them to dominate the technique properly. This is why, the fear of frequent and furious mistake is increasing as well as the risk of rapid spread out of the deadly virus is increasing, said Bangladesh Medical Technologist Association.
The Ministry of Health claimed that the process to recruit 1,200 technologists is going on in this purpose. But, when the recruitment will be completed, none knows that.
According to the suggestion of WHO, there are needed three nurses and five medical technologists against a physician. As per the statistics, at least 3.5 lakh technologists are needed in the country against 70,000 doctors. But, there are only 2.26 percent technologists in the country against the demand.
According to the statistics of Health Ministry, there are 7,920 posts of medical technologists in 19 categories. Of them, some 5,184 persons are in work. Some 2736 posts are vacant. There are 2,182 posts of technologists for infectious diseases like corona. But, some 1,417 persons are on duty, while 765 posts are still vacant.
Experts said, the government should appoint technologists and expand their skill by providing training immediately to curb the crisis.
Health Department sources said, corona sample testing activities are going on at around 41 laboratories across the country, but it is not enough for the demand. The technologists, who are now servicing, are mostly inefficient. They have joined their hands in the work after taking a day training, which was not adequate for their learning, many of them said seeking anonymity.
Meanwhile, develop countries in the globe have given attention to increase the testing activities to protect from the virus. But, Bangladesh has remained behind in this context.
Sources said, the recruitment of trained technologists has remained off since the 12 years as a case in this regard is still under trial by high court. Consequently, over 15,000 trained technologists have remained unemployed for long.
If those trained people are recruited, the crisis may be removed mostly, experts seem.
The health workers, who have taken a-day training on it, have no adequate concept on anatomy and physiology, physicians said.
BMTA authorities say, the patient will be harmed, if the samples are not collected correctly and the test is not done perfectly. On the other hand, the sample collectors may fall at risk as well as the apprehension of community transmission is enhanced.
According to the data of IEDCR, around three dozens of medical technologists, who were involved with sample collection and testing, have been infected with COVID-19 so far.
Seeking anonymity, a senior officer of Health Department said, the matter of recruitment depends on Health Ministry. But, the sample collection and testing works go on in faulty way, people life will fall at high risk.
To reduce the risk and avert the frequent mistakes, the government should appoint necessary medical technologists as soon as possible with a view to increase the testing capacity. Otherwise, the crisis may take serious turn within short time, he claimed.
