In fact, this is going to happen in reality. The Dhaka WASA is saying, people living in Dhaka will drink the water of the Meghna by the year 2024. Dhaka WASA has taken a project namely, ‘Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project’ based on the master plan in 2012 to purify and supply drinking water to the city dwellers, sourcing water from the river Meghna. According to that plan, the WASA has been implementing the project at Ganddhrpur of Rupganj under Narayanganj district. WASA source said Daily Industry, water of the Meghna river from Bishondi area will be linked to the project in Narayanganj and then this water will be treated and purified here. This purified water will be supplied through the pipeline at the distribution network which is situated at Baridhara. Then this water will be supplied at Uttara, Badda, Gulshan, Banani, Mirpur and adjoining areas, the source added. The primary cost of the project was estimated at Tk 3,199 crore. On completion of this project, everyday as much as 50 crore litre of purified water will be supplied in Dhaka city.In the meantime, it is known that the work of the project has advanced far ahead. The infrastructure of the project has already been prepared, and rest of the work, the activities are going on in full swing participated by the local and exotic workers all over the project area, it was found. The personnel concerning the project informed Daily Industry that the work was a bit slow due to the Covid-19, but the speed of work has considerably increased. Meanwhile 30 percent work of the project is finished, they said.Dhaka WASA is presently supplying water for more than 1.5 crore people living in Dhaka city. The WASA source informed that they are supplying water to the city dwellers from the underground water through deep tube well, but now they are shifting this process and trying to use surface water. They are trying to treat the surface water instead of underground water, because the excessive lifting of the underground water has caused environmental hazard and ecological unbalancing. WASA is working on five projects targeting to balancing the ecology. They said, at present WASA is supplying 265 crore litres of water to the citizens of Dhaka by utilizing 34 percent surface water and 66 percent deep tube-well water. But they want to meet this demand through the supply of 70 percent surface water and 30 percent underground water. The environmentalists have welcomed and lauded the new water supply project of Dhaka WASA. They said, these types of environment-friendly projects and activities can save us from environmental hazards.
