At last, Bangladesh is going to enter into the era of underground railway, which is expecting to be opened the door of more development and resolve the traffic difficulties in the city.
According to the sources, preparation to construct two more Metro rails in the city to control the city’s traffic congestion is going on. Of them, 19.872 km will be first underground rail line in the country’s history.
Authorities concerned of the Metro rail project-Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has planned to start the projects involving at Tk 93,800 crore in a period from 2026 to 2028 with the financial assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
At least Tk 1,683 crore will be spent against construction of each kilometer line. The cost of land acquisition and rehabilitation in this purpose has been fixed at Tk 2,355 crore as per the rate at
Tk 59,87,79,000 per hectare.
Experts said, Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, where around 44,100 people live on each square kilometer area. Consequently, around 3 crore trips are created every day in and around the city. The measure of trips will reach at around 4.20 crore by 2025 and 5.20 crore by 2035. Movement of the commuters will be highly difficult at that time.
Considering the situation, the authorities concerned have taken preparation to implement the projects. If the projects are implemented properly, the pressure of traffic will come to reduce mostly, they added.
Underground railway of the Metro rail line-1 will be constructed between Kamalapur and Airport along with 12 stations. Besides, 13.50 Km long MRT Line-5 underground rail line Northern route will contain nine stations. Construction cost of the line has been fixed at Tk 41,238 crore with the completion deadline 2028.
On the other hand, around 17.40 Km MRT line-5 Southern routes will be constructed at a cost of Tk 36,000 crore by 2030 along with 12 stations out of 16.
Khan Md Mizanul Islam, Manager (public relation) of the project said, “If the project is implemented in time, the traffic congestion in the mega city will come to reduce mostly. It will open the door of new horizon.”
