City dwellers have been facing immense crisis of safe drinking water for the last few years due to massive corruption, irregularities and negligence by the authorities concerned of Dhaka WASA. They are being forced to use dirty, unhygienic and smelly water day by day.
City dwellers also staged demonstrations including rally, human chain and strike several times demanding supply of pure drinking water, but to no effect. At one stage, the matter reached to the court, when the WASA authorities challenged saying that their supplied water is safe and able for drinking. The court formed a specialist team in July last to verify the standard of WASA water.
After an investigation, the team submitted a report saying that the claim of WASA was not truth. The water is contaminated and unable to drink, even use in any other purpose. It is containing E. coli bacteria, which is harmful for the human bodies.
A report of World Health Organization (WHO) said, around 2.5 crore people most of them children and elderly men are victims of immature death each year after being affected with several water born diseases.
According to the statistics of government and non-government organizations, country is facing a crisis of around 10 crore litters pure and safe drinking water daily.
