Says Mercantile Bank CEO Quamrul Islam
Eminent banker and Managing Director of Mercantile Bank Limited Md Quamrul Islam Chowdhury said that he has seen freedom fight of Bangladesh but he could not take part in the freedom fight due to not arrange Tk 5. He was delivering speech in the seminar on the Banking Policy of Bangabandhu recently organized by Daily Industry in the city.
Quamrul Islam Chowdhury said: His father and uncles have participated in the great freedom fight in 1971 but he could not attend the fight due lack of Tk 5 while he was a student of class VIII.
Quamrul recalls the days while the freedom fight was conducted cited the contribution of Bangabandhu in reconstitution of banking system and war-torn economy of Bangladesh.
He said that his mother gave him Tk 1.50 to Tk 2 for buying daily kitchen market items but he was expecting Tk 5 to get the chance of joining in the freedom fight. “Unfortunately my mother never gives me Tk 5 for marketing and I can’t attend the fight, he added.
His father helped Mr Abdul Hannan to announce the Independence declaration message of Bangabandhu from the Sadhin Bangla Beter Kendra, Quamrul Islam claimed. He said with his untold reaction that the Pakistani military have burnt the currency of Bangladesh just before surrender. They have (Pak military) looted our resources and assets and finally burnt our currencies to destroy our banking system and economy but Bangabandhu has been able to rebuild the whole system and economy within the shortest period of time, Quamrul Islam pointed out.
He started his banking career in National Bank Limited in 1983 as Probationary Officer just after completing his Masters Degree in Marketing from Dhaka University. Chowdhury later joined in NCCBL holding position of Senior Asstt. Vice President and Branch In-Charge of Jubilee Road Branch, Chittagong. He joined Mercantile Bank Limited in February 2001 and posted as Branch Incumbent of Khatungonj Branch, Chittagong. He served as Head of Agrabad Branch, Chittagong, Zonal Head of Chittagong Region and Head of Main Branch, Dhaka.
Md. Quamrul Islam Chowdhury has gradually promoted in different senior positions and finally become the Managing Director and CEO of the bank.
He told Daily Industry that Mercantile Bank is playing a significant role in building the rural economy by financing the SMEs, rural projects enlightening the spirit of Bangabandhu. “The main focus of Mercantile Bank is to strengthen the rural economy and create job opportunity for the under-privileged population of the country,” he added.
Bangabandhu has given us Independent Bangladesh and his able daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given us economic freedom, he pointed out lauding the financial stability of present Bangladesh.
Mentioning the financial capability he said that a good number of foreigners are working in Bangladesh and it could be few hundred thousand within next ten years by the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. “Our 10 million people are now working in abroad but in 10 years we’ll be able to provide job for the foreigners,” Quamrul mentioned.
