Above 48,000 Ansars are employed in security duty at 4,010 organisations
Zahid Hossain Biplob: Ansar and VDP members are always playing a vital role in maintaining law and order situation across the country but they are yet to get recognition by the authorities concerned accordingly.
Ansars play the key role in ensuring discipline and peace during several occasions including national and local elections.
In addition, they also contribute to ensure smooth functioning of traffic as well as providing security at government, semi-government and private organisations as well.
Unfortunately, their wide spread engagement in country’s security, Ansars are facing discrimination to avail their adequate facilities.
General Ansar members have to go on a mandatory six month leave after three years of service. When an Ansar member is on leave, a message is usually sent informing the person of his/her next post but this message often takes 3 to 4 months after the six month leave is over.
Ansar website adds: “Ansar members with smart cards will get the message within 15 days.”
However, Ansar members disclosed different opinion regarding this matter. They claimed that the message of reqruting at a new post often takes six months to reach them.
During this time, the Ansar members are usually unemployed and leading a painful life due to lack of inadequate salary.
Ansar members perform duties sincerely at several places including the government offices, markets, banks, financial institutes and hospitals.
As per Ansar headquarters, more than 48,000 Ansars are serving for security purpose at 4,010 organisations.
As per police headquarter information, 2,500 Ansar members and more than 2,000 Ansars are performing duties along with police to ensure law and order situation in the country.
No Ansar member is working with BGB at the moment; however, they are involved in ensuring security at sea, land and airports areas. Around 2,400 general Ansars and 40 battalion Ansars are performing duties at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
While performing duties at the 11th national parliamentary election, five Ansar members died to perform their duty.
Apart from this, they also played a vital role in ensuring security during Biswa Iztima, Durga Pooja and other festivals.
An Ansar member Shahin, adds: “I get Tk 13,000 as salary when I stay in the camp. This money is not sufficient to carry my family expenditure”.
We get rations like rice, wheat and oil but it is less than other forces, he added.
Experts said Ansar are playing their role in an integrated manner to identify the militants and terrorists in their respective areas.
The authorities concerned would take more steps for strengthening their capacity to ensure peace in the society, they recommended.
However, Bangladesh Ansar is one of the largest forces of the country linked with grassroots people. As a discipline force, they are very close to the people. Considering this, the force has an immense importance to ensure peace in the country.
Major General Kazi Sharif Kaikobad, director general of Ansar and VDP said, members of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP have been working to maintain law and order and ensure public security during different national, social and religious festivals over the years.
Members of Ansar and VDP are vigilant against drug abuse, militancy and terrorism. Besides, they have been demonstrating their competence and successes in all sorts of national crisis and emergencies, he added.
