TM Mamun from Bogura: Agrani Bank, one of the leading state-owned commercial banks, has sucked at least Tk 4 crore illegally from some 150,000 customers account in Bogura district as half yearly account maintaining charge.
According to the official order of the bank, no half yearly charge will be deducted from an account, if the account holder maintains the bellow amount worth Tk 10,000. However, the branch authority has deducted money from some accounts that maintained poor balances.
Banking sources said that banks are permitted to deduct half yearly account maintenance charge only from the STD account. Any bank can received such amount under special instruction between bank authority and an account holder. Banks are not permitted to deduct such kind of hidden account charge from the general account holders. “If any bank conduct such kind of activity, it is completely unethical”, he said.
Meanwhile, many customers claimed to Daily Industry that the branch authority deducted amount violating the Bangladesh Bank rules. The demanded the central bank for scrutinising the matter promptly to get rid of the sufferings of the general account holders.
Sources said, some vested official are involved to conduct such unethical activities to make a profit branch as well as prove their efficiency. The bank authority simply cheated with the customers to please the higher authority and to gain promotion, they claimed. Some vested staffs of the bank swindled the money from the accounts to show the success of alone bank official in the district that already has created a panic among the clients.
They clients yet to get any effective step in this connection, although they have filed written complains to the respective branches.
They cheating incident came to light when 5,500 account holders of Poradah Branch witnessed the deduction money from their respective account, said a victim.
Riding on this calculation, it may be said that the bank authority received at least Tk 4 crore from 150,000 account holders of the remaining 29 branches of the said bank, he also mentioned.
Sheikh Akram Hossain, Deputy Manager of Agrani Bank in Bogura agreed the matter and assured that the incident took place for mistakenly and necessary steps have been taken to resolve the problem soon.
