Onion at Tk 16 per kg
Staff Correspondent: Onion is being sold at Tk 16 per kg at Hili land port in Dinajpur due to an increase in imports. Last week, onion was sold at Tk 23-24 per kg, but now it has come down to Tk 15-16. And Tk 11-12 per kg of low-quality onion. After a long closure for 75 days due to coronavirus outbreak, onion import in compliance with the health rules through the port has been resumed on June 8.
About the price fall, onion importer Bablur Rahman said onion imports from India have started after a long hiatus. As Eid-ul-Adha is ahead, the demand for onions increases at this time. This is why the excessive onions are being imported.
Meanwhile, the demand for onions has also declined due to the declaration of red zones in different districts of the country to prevent coronavirus infection. As a result, prices have dropped.
Last week, 5,889 metric tons of onions were imported in 278 Indian trucks through the land ports. In the first two working days of this week, 1,700 metric tons of onions arrived in 70 trucks.
He further informed. It is taking some extra time for onions to come from India as there is limited import and export through the port in compliance with the health regulations. It takes 4-5 days for the trucks to enter the port. As a result, onions are rotting and the quality is deteriorating due to excessive heat as they are kept in the truck for a long time. Importers have to face also lose too.
