Bulk portion of the apparel, IT and traveling sectors are under their occupation
Golam Mostafa Jibon : Over 4.5 lakh Indians out of 5 lakh have been working illegally at different sectors in Bangladesh due to lack of proper monitoring by the authorities concerned. Most of them are sending their salary money to their own country through both the dollar and Hundi.
According to the sources, around 5 lakh Indians live in Bangladesh and work at different sectors including apparel, IT and travel agencies. Of them, only 10 percent have work permit, while rest 90 percent or 4.5 lakh don’t have work permit. Those, who have no work permit, have been working and living in Bangladesh illegally. Most of them came to the country with tourist visa. But, they did not return to their homeland.
Indians have a strong supremacy in the country’s IT sector due to India based software and management system. Besides, a large portion of Indians have grabbed apparel and travel sectors in the country. Many Indians are also involved with advertisement and consultancy activities in different print and electronic media in Bangladesh.
Experts said, Indians have a strong position in the country’s garments sector. The domination is likely to increase in future due to sudden outbreak of coronaviruse among the Chinese.
It may fall a negative impact on the Chinese nationals, who are working in the country’s apparel and other important sectors.
Seeking anonymity, an entrepreneur said, Bangladeshi firms almost provide works to the Indian nationals due to use of their technologies in the software and management system. A bulk portion of the travel agents are still under control of Indians. Taking the advantage, most of the time, Indians get highly priority in context of recruiting. Such situation has been created only for want of government’s proper policy.
Fahim Mashrum, Chief Executive of bdjobs.com said, “Indians are on the top among the working foreigners. Shree Langka, China and Thailand are at the next position. But, around 90 percent of the Indians have no work permit as they have joined at different works illegally after coming in the country with tourist visa. Many of the workers take their salaries from India as the recruiting agencies have developed a system to pay their salary from India instead of Bangladesh. Thus, huge amount of remittances is going to India through illegal channel.”
Transparency International Bangaldesh (TIB) in its recent report said that, over 2.5 lakh foreigners are working in the country. Of them, only 90,000 are legal. They came to the country taking legal approval. Rests are running work without proper permission. Those illegal foreign workers are siphoning Tk 26,400 crore each year from Bangladesh. Though, TIB produced the report on the basis of 85,486 legal foreign workers’ information given by the Home Minister in 2018. But, the unauthorized sources claimed that the number of illegal foreigners will be two or three times highest than the said figure.
A number of garments owners said, “There is a lacking of skill manpower in the country’s apparel sector. Therefore, Indians control the local buying houses. Over 1 lakh Indian nationals are now working in different garments without any legal approval. The number is high in buying houses. Thus, the Indians have established an unseen supremacy in the country’s economy sector.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of TIB said, “Huge amount of remittances is going out from the country in illegal means each year. But, there is no one to watch it. Not only this, country’s youths are keeping unemployed for years and leading miserable life for want of jobs. But, illegal foreigners are taking away the country’s money grabbing different jobs.”
He urged the government to take immediate step on this regard so that country’s money is saved and job facilities are created for the local youths.
